Post 12: Independent Work Towards Targets

Below is evidence of my independent work done in order to achieve my targets:

To make sure there is enough time for all the filming to be carried out.
In order to make sure there is more time for filming, in the next task I  will make sure that our group films several weeks before the deadline of filming in order to have time to re-film if we need to.

To improve the shot sizes when filming.
http://www.urbanfox.tv/creative/shotsizes.html -This website has a general list of shot sizes on which I have revised from and in the next task I will now be able to select the correct shot sizes and position the camera to capture them.

To improve the placement of the camera during filming.
http://www.siggraph.org/education/materials/HyperGraph/animation/cameras/traditional_film_camera_techniqu.htm- This website has information on camera shots and how to use a camera in order to capture the shots, this will help me in the next task in order to capture the correct shots without making any mistakes.

Find a location that isn't crowded or noisy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filming_location- This website has information on location and pro's and con's when selecting a location, after reading through this I can now be more selective and hopefully choose a better location in the next task.

To be able to improve my skills when working in the edit suite.
I have been to the edit suite in school and practised using the different tools in order to improve my own skills. In the next task I will now be able to use the edit suite with confidence.

Post 11: Targets

My targets that I aim to achieve are as follows:
  1. To make sure there is enough time for all the filming to be carried out.
  2. To improve the shot sizes when filming.
  3. To improve the placement of the camera during filming.
  4. Find a location that isn't crowded or noisy.
  5. To be able to improve my skills when working in the edit suite.

Post 10: Evaluation of Skills Developed

During the process of our pre-production stage when the group was planning and putting our ideas together, I think everyone worked well as a team. Personally I didn't know the other members of my group very well but once we started on the task we managed to get a lot done without any difficulties and worked well together.

From the very beginning there were a lot of technical skills involved with this task such as the location recce and the shot list. These were not a major challenge to the group as we have had past experience in Media Studies in GCSE so therefore we tackled the tasks well and managed to get a lot of detail into it, which is what we wanted. Along with their being technical skills, there was also a fair amount of creativity needed from me and each individual member of the group. We needed to be creative when thinking about what ideas to have in the first place for our preliminary task, we had to be creative when developing our storyboard together in order to show that there is an element of creativity throughout the development of our film. Some personal skills that I had to think about from the off was I needed to be able to work as a team member and contribute to the group as much as the others did and I also had to input some of my previous knowledge with the other members knowledge in order for us all to do all well as we can.

During the production of our work the technical skills that we as a group came across would mostly be handling and working with the camera. We had to concentrate on getting the right shots and getting what we wanted in the scene. One way that helped us do this was when we were filming shot reverse shot of Charley and Katie at the table, we put tape on the floor so that we could get the camera back in the same position after we'd moved it. Creativity wasn't a major part of the filming process as we'd already thought of how the set was going to be laid out and the mise-en-scene in the pre-production stage. Personally I think learnt that the catching the right shot size is harder when actually carrying it out than what it is just talking about which shot size to have. I learnt that the positioning of the camera is very important and can influence continuity massively.

The post production stage followed this, where we all edited together the shots and saw our film finally come together. We had to use the edit suite and make decisions on which shots to take and add to the film, one problem here that we had to overcome was getting the right camera and lead in order to connect it up to the camera to get the footage onto the computer. During this stage I learnt a lot about how to work when editing a film together, I learnt about logging rushes with their in codes and out codes and personally I think during the whole of the editing process I learnt more than I did at any other stage.

Looking back at the preliminary, I think as a group we didn't do a bad job but there could be some improvements. Such as following the script and not missing out any lines, which is what happened and giving ourselves more time to film and edit together the footage, this way there would be fewer mistakes.

Post 9: Post-Production

Once we had filmed the footage on the camera, we connected the camera up to the computer and up to the edit suite and captured our film. Once the three of us were in the edit suite we created a table that would log the rushes, we then added information about scene, shot, take, the description and whether we used it or not.

After we completed the table as a group, we then began to edit the rushes together and began to see the film coming together. We cut the rushes  that we didn’t want to use  and edited carefully the shots we wanted to make sure we could get the continuity as good as we could.  There were some problems here and we worked quite a lot of cutting the shot where Charley enters the library as the continuity didn’t work very well to start with. After editing it around a little we manage to increase the continuity and make it look slightly better. After we'd sorted out the continuity problem we continued to put together the rushes until we had successfully got them together, in the right order and saw the draft of our film come together.
The table below shows how our group logged the rushes together in a clear, understandable table:

Once the draft of our film was completed we all as a group watched it through closely looking out for any mistakes that were obvious to the audience. There were a few noticeable errors that we had to adjust and edit within our film such as when Charley walks over to sit down at the table with Katie and I. There was a mistake here as the number of footsteps Charley takes to get to the table showed a continuity error that we had to edit, but as we couldn't re-film due to time issues we had to do the best we could with what we had.

Our group decided that we weren't going to use any backing music as the diegetic sound in our location of our voices was just about right anyway and it's clear in the film that our voices can be heard quite easily and clearly. Any non-diegetic music that we could've used such as sad, slow background music would've probably ruined the atmosphere and made it seem less realistic to the audience so I feel we made the right decision of leaving it out. We then as a group decided to add effects to the beginning and end, such as stripes and a title at the beginning and credits at the end. Also we decided to add cross fade effects at the beginning and end of our footage.
